YouTube announced that starting March 19, it will implement mechanisms to block content related to illegal online gambling websites. According to Agência Gov this measure aligns with complaints made by the Ministry of Sports regarding digital influencers who promote betting with misleading promises of easy profits, without warning users about the associated risks.

According to the new guidelines, content creators on the platform will be prohibited from referencing or directing viewers to illegal betting sites and apps. This includes URLs, links embedded in images or text, and verbal mentions. “Content that promises guaranteed returns may be removed, regardless of whether the online gambling site or app has been approved by Google,” emphasizes the new usage policy on the platform.

National Secretariat of Sports Betting and Economic Development (Snaede), part of the Ministry of Sports, identified a network of more than 53 accounts and 25 channels on YouTube promoting betting with false profit promises, attracting audiences of over 100,000 viewers per broadcast. The channels were reported by the Ministry of Sports to the Ministry of Justice, the Federal Police, and during a public hearing at the Supreme Federal Court.

According to Snaede Secretary Giovanni Rocco, in light of these complaints, the Ministry of Justice opened an inquiry, and YouTube pre-emptively announced that advertising for betting must only be linked to sites authorized by the Brazilian government, which must be hosted under the “.bet.br” domain.

“This is a victory for the Ministry of Sports, for Snaede, and for the courage of Minister André Fufuca, who pursued this complaint. This result represents progress in protecting the most vulnerable families, who are often deceived by scammers disguised as digital influencers,” Rocco stated.
